Mac enable screen sharing from terminal
If you are looking to enable screen sharing on a remote mac (tested on a snow leopard machine accessing a leopard machine) via the Terminal then there is a simple, tried and tested solution.
Firstly establish an SSH session to the machine you want to enable Screen Sharing on.
Secondly use the following code:
cd /Library/Preferences/
echo -n enabled > com.apple.ScreenSharing.launchd
Note: the file did not exist originally.
You should now be able to access the machine via Screen Sharing

Mac Hosts File
In order to change the hosts file settings on a Mac (probably most versions Snow Leopard verified).
Open a Terminal and use the following code:
sudo nano /etc/hosts
et voila
Job jobbed
Mac OS X – Show Invisible Files in Finder
So have you tried looking everywhere for a simple option to show/hide invisible files in Mac OS X Finder…..me too !
I found a great way to easily do this, through the Terminal.
So firstly you will have to open the Terminal application, which can be found in the Applications > Utilities folder – search in Spotlight for ‘Terminal’.
Once you are at the command line simply type the following to show invisible files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
and to reverse the procedure simple type the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder

Free encryption software
Another way to ensure any sensitive data is safe is to encrypt it.
Whether on a usb stick, in a folder on your hard drive or in your pc – if it goes missing and is encrypted you dont have to worry. (expert black hats this article does not apply to you).
Search the net for truecrypt a free program that supports the mainstream platforms.
Truecrypt is a free encryption program that secures files, folders, usb sticks and entire hard drives.

PING for beginners
If you have problems with your compter or laptop connecting to the internet, no doubt you be speaking to someone like me in the near future.
A common statement I hear nearly everday is “i cant connect to the internet”.
One of the first commands you will be asked to run is PING (Google the term ping computer network command if you want to know it is so called), this is likened to the of a sonar PING on a submarine.
If there is underlying network connectivity and access then you will get some technical data back with a summary in the bottom right hand corner teling you the % of your Ping signal lost.
The task is carried out in the command line area (start run > cmd > ok), and looks like this:
Something\documents and settings\ > ping 8.8.8.8
You can ignore everything before the word ping as this will be different on each machine.!
So, the first part we have the word ping and the second part is the server we are pinging.
In is example i used a number instead of a server name, the reason why is for another day.
If that works ok and you get feedback showing 0% loss then move on to the next…..if not then you better call me.
Something\documents and settings\ > ping bbc.co.uk
If that works then you loog set to go, if Internet explorer still wont display your page try another web browser like firefox. (google mozilla firefox download if you dont have it yet !)
