Creating a Favourites folder on your mac

Mac users, we have Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, Downloads, etc…

where is our favourites folder?

Here is a simple way to take matters into your own hands !

Go to your home folder > create a new folder – let’s call it Favourites.

Now, i used bbedit to create a text file, but textedit should be fine.

Use the following code and replace where necessary:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN""http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>URL</key>
<string>http://www.your-website-here.com/</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Save the file with something appropriate – like MyLink and add the extension .webloc (which is short for website location (presumably).

We are left with a file in our favourites folder called MyLink.webloc.

Double clicking on this file will open in your default browser.

Job done !

Protect your USB data

If like most of the population you use a USB memory stick or USB hard drive to store data on – is it protected?

If you USB stick fell into the wrong hands, you left it on the bus seat, it fell out of your bag somewhere – what did it have it on it?

Is there anything on there that is important?

It’s ok i deleted all the important stuff last week !!

Well anyone in the data recovery industry will tell you that means not much at this stage – it’s what we do !!

However, encrypting your drive is a whole different ball game !

Windows Key Shortcuts

There is a key that usually sits between CTRL and ALT – commonly known as the Windows key.

It is probably still the most shiniest key on the keyboard as it hardly ever gets pressed – am I right ??

Here are a couple of it’s uses:

Windows Key alone = opens your start menu

Windows Key + E = open My Computer

Windows Key + C = opens Control Panel

Windows Key + S = toggles CaPs LoCk on/off

Hope this provides some amusement for now – more will of course follow.

Another great tip from LCRM, providing support when IT counts.

Amazon Kindle

It has been possible to test the Amazon Kindle recently, just before making the decision to purchase an Apple iPad.

Thinking this would be a no brainer, the Kinfle sure is pleasant surprise.

Finding digital ink, in the past, to appear granular and unnattractive – progress has definitely been achieved.

The Kindle has a great resolution, impressive and welcome battery life, a nice feel to hold, a stylish brushed metal backing, excellent viewing angles, huge selection of books even for us IT gurus, wifi of course, the ability to upload and view PDF files (although not protected) via USB and loads more features such ad an MP3 player.

The Kindle possibly also ships with free 3G – but that needs further research.

As for the iPad – review will follow, by then the decision will have been made!!

Forensic Readiness Plan

The first thing we do in a fire is go to the allocated meeting point..

What do you do in the event of a digital emergency – follow the Forensic Readiness Plan.

Whats an FRP and does the company have one? Probably not, but they are becoming increasingly popular and more and more of a necessity with companies employing staff.

An FRP can be as simple as ensuring all user activities are logged, including network access requests, file access times and login/access attempts to highly detailed monitoring and forward thinking procedures – you might contract a company as your on standby first responder.

Realistically, and with the home user in mind, lets take a common scenario into account. You have cleverly and successfully managed to wipe you C:\ drive or eradicate you My Documents folder with 2000 of your most precious photos in. What do you do ??

Simple – pull the plug !

Literally pull the plug, do not shutdown, do not pass go, cut the power to that machine ASAP.

The reason is – the more activity that takes place on that disk – the less and less and less chance you, I or any other practitioner has of recovering your data.

Thats it for now, the most basic basics in an event of loss of data.

Exchange 2003 virtual domains

If you have Exchange setup and want to accept email to more than one domain, you can by the following:

Open system manager.
Drill down to recipient policies.
Right click on the default policy choosing properties.
Amend as neccessary.

Should do the job.

IMAP Commands

Found a great website to help with useful IMAP commands:

Enjoy

Imapsync migration from Zimbra to Kerio

If you are setting up a new Kerio mail server and want to use imapsync to port across your emails, this following command helps to re-locate your email folders from the existing server into a nice way on your tidy new Kerio server.

imapsync –syncinternaldates –subscribe –ssl1 –ssl2 –authuser1 admin –user1 user1 –passfile1 /home/user1/.passwordfile –user2 olduser1 –passfile2 /home/user1/.oldpasswordfile –sep2 / –prefix2 “INBOX/” –nofastio1 –nofastio2

That should nicely transfer all existing emails into their respective folders underneath your new Kerio Inbox folder.

replace admin; user1; user2; /home/user1/{.passwordfile, .oldpasswordfile} with your details.

Enjoy
