Mac enable screen sharing from terminal

If you are looking to enable screen sharing on a remote mac (tested on a snow leopard machine accessing a leopard machine) via the Terminal then there is a simple, tried and tested solution.

Firstly establish an SSH session to the machine you want to enable Screen Sharing on.

Secondly use the following code:

cd /Library/Preferences/
echo -n enabled > com.apple.ScreenSharing.launchd

Note: the file did not exist originally.

You should now be able to access the machine via Screen Sharing

Creating a Favourites folder on your mac

Mac users, we have Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, Downloads, etc…

where is our favourites folder?

Here is a simple way to take matters into your own hands !

Go to your home folder > create a new folder – let’s call it Favourites.

Now, i used bbedit to create a text file, but textedit should be fine.

Use the following code and replace where necessary:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN""http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>URL</key>
<string>http://www.your-website-here.com/</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Save the file with something appropriate – like MyLink and add the extension .webloc (which is short for website location (presumably).

We are left with a file in our favourites folder called MyLink.webloc.

Double clicking on this file will open in your default browser.

Protecting yourself, your family and your wallet from online threats

Like all good businesses we monitor our statistics.

It isn’t hard, even after a quick glance, to see that one of the most common areas of our workload centres around malware infected PCs.

Our stats show that of the computers that come in with a malware identified issue, over 90% show signs of p2p file sharing applications.

The details of each variant of virus infection are only really important to the technician cleaning the malware.

What is important to know is that your computer is safe and fit for doing your home banking, for your kids to go on club penguin or to store your personal media on.

It can take a day, two days or even longer to thoroughly detect, identify, clean and recheck a system well enough for us to return to its owner.

As part of LCRM’s quality of service we understand that life has unexpected surprises and our follow-up promise to our customers gurantees a second re-infected repair for free.

If a machine comes into our workshop with an infection, we clean it to our high standards, through workings with Sophos, Norton and Microsoft, and after you get it back – if it gets infected again we will clean it again once for free.

That’s our good will promise — not an opportunity for you to go hunting for trouble !

We remove all instances of p2p file sharing applications before releasing jobs.

We also issue educational material free of charge to all infected pc owners.

All this to help keep you surfing safely.

Free encryption software

Another way to ensure any sensitive data is safe is to encrypt it.

Whether on a usb stick, in a folder on your hard drive or in your pc – if it goes missing and is encrypted you dont have to worry. (expert black hats this article does not apply to you).

Search the net for truecrypt a free program that supports the mainstream platforms.

Truecrypt is a free encryption program that secures files, folders, usb sticks and entire hard drives.

Protect your USB data

If like most of the population you use a USB memory stick or USB hard drive to store data on – is it protected?

If you USB stick fell into the wrong hands, you left it on the bus seat, it fell out of your bag somewhere – what did it have it on it?

Is there anything on there that is important?

It’s ok i deleted all the important stuff last week !!

Well anyone in the data recovery industry will tell you that means not much at this stage – it’s what we do !!

However, encrypting your drive is a whole different ball game !

Keyboard shortcut for system info

Todays Tips

To find out what operating system you are running, how much memory your system has installed and the processor you have try:

Windows + ‘Pause Break’

If you are on a laptop and ‘Pause Break’ is in blue this mean you need to look for an Fn (Function) key. Press and hold the function ley and then the ‘Pause Break’ button.

If anyone knows a real reason for using ‘Pause Break’ in Windows alone I would love to hear ……

To switch application windows you are currently working with. For example if you have Firefox open with your favourite homepage ready for you, and Word is open with a novel you are writing and need to quickly look something up on the Internet – try this

Press and hold ALT then press TAB once to switch through any open application windows.

Windows Key Shortcuts

There is a key that usually sits between CTRL and ALT – commonly known as the Windows key.

It is probably still the most shiniest key on the keyboard as it hardly ever gets pressed – am I right ??

Here are a couple of it’s uses:

Windows Key alone = opens your start menu

Windows Key + E = open My Computer

Windows Key + C = opens Control Panel

Windows Key + S = toggles CaPs LoCk on/off

Hope this provides some amusement for now – more will of course follow.
