BlackBerry Soft Reset

How easy is it to do a soft reset on a BlackBerry mobile ?

It’s as simple as it is on a PC when you do ‘ctrl-alt-del’.

On the BlackBerry handset press and hold the keys ‘left-alt’ ‘aA’ ‘del’ (the aA is bottom-right on the keypad)

Apple Mail Snow Leopard Layout

So, here is another general grip from the community of Mac users. In particular Apple Mail 5.1 has decided it knows the best way for me to view my email !

I don’t agree, is there a compromise, can I just turn off the preview – no ??

One last panic switch it seems, is available in the preferences panel – all or nothing partner !!!

Open Apple Mail > Preferences -> Viewing and tick ‘Use classic layout’.

Apple Mail 5.1 Use Classic Layout

Creating a Favourites folder on your mac

Mac users, we have Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, Downloads, etc…

where is our favourites folder?

Here is a simple way to take matters into your own hands !

Go to your home folder > create a new folder – let’s call it Favourites.

Now, i used bbedit to create a text file, but textedit should be fine.

Use the following code and replace where necessary:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN""http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>URL</key>
<string>http://www.your-website-here.com/</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Save the file with something appropriate – like MyLink and add the extension .webloc (which is short for website location (presumably).

We are left with a file in our favourites folder called MyLink.webloc.

Double clicking on this file will open in your default browser.

Job done !

Amazon Kindle

It has been possible to test the Amazon Kindle recently, just before making the decision to purchase an Apple iPad.

Thinking this would be a no brainer, the Kinfle sure is pleasant surprise.

Finding digital ink, in the past, to appear granular and unnattractive – progress has definitely been achieved.

The Kindle has a great resolution, impressive and welcome battery life, a nice feel to hold, a stylish brushed metal backing, excellent viewing angles, huge selection of books even for us IT gurus, wifi of course, the ability to upload and view PDF files (although not protected) via USB and loads more features such ad an MP3 player.

The Kindle possibly also ships with free 3G – but that needs further research.

As for the iPad – review will follow, by then the decision will have been made!!

Setting up two printers on a single machines

If you have only one parallel port and need to connect two printers check to see if one has an ethernet port with an RJ45 connector, if so here is what you do:

Connect up your parallel port printer as needed and install as neccesary with drivers and such.

Find yourself a cross-over cable and and extra ethernet card, and manually connect up the second printer to the new network card.

Manually configure the second ‘Local Area Network Connection’.

Most probably the following setting will work on a Windows~ machine.

IP 192.168.2.1

Subnet 255.255.255.0

Gateway 0.0.0.0

DNS: <leave empty>

Follow the instructions to setup your ethernet card connected printer with the following configuration:

IP 192.168.2.2

Subnet 255.255.255.0

Gateway 0.0.0.0

Now add the new printer by Control Panel > Printers and Faxes, choose Local Printer but do not click the attached directly button.

Click next and then create your own port at the bottom by chooing TCP/IP.

Click next and just type 192.168.2.2 in the IP Address box.

Click next and you should instanty be shown the new printer successful install page – click Finish to Finish.

Thats the best way, you can then share those printers on your locally connected network. The serial pors for printers are useless and parallel port switch boxes are just very inconvenient on a network with more than one PC or laptop.
